Constellation Papyri

PB 1

Land register reused for a copy of books 5 and 6 of Homer’s Iliad
Description: This papyrus roll originally contained a land register mentioning the Panopolite nome written along the fibers (→); the latest date mentioned in the register is 215-216 CE (“P.Bodmer I recto,” said to have been published by Derda, but unavailable). The columns of the land register are numbered, and the preserved portion of the roll contains material from columns 48 to 89. This roll was cut and the blank side (↓) reused to make copies of books 5 and 6 of the Iliad, which were written upside down relative to the text of the land register (Martin, Papyrus Bodmer I. In addition to the framed fragments, there remain several unplaced fragments of the land register, some of them substantial. P.Bodmer 1 is said to have been purchased in Cairo and brought through Tunis by H. H. Abdul Wahab in 1951 (Méla, 34).
