Description: P.Bodmer 58 is a papyrus codex that was dismantled and rebound in the nineteenth century. It has diverse contents and may derive from the Monastery of Epiphanius at Thebes. Crum states it is written in a very pure Sahidic. P.Bodmer 58 was formerly part of the large collection amassed by Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872). The circumstances under which Phillipps acquired the book are unclear. It was in his possession before about 1863, since it already appeared as number 18833 in the portion of the catalog of his collection that appeared that year (Munby, The Catalogues, 12-13; Crum, Der Papyruscodex, ix). It may be the case that the codex came from the monastery of Epiphanius at Thebes (Crum and Evelyn White, The Monastery of Epiphanius, 299, item 578, note 1; Boud’hors, “Le P.Bodmer 58”). It is likely that it came into Bodmer’s collection through the same channels as other material from the estate of Phillipps, by way of the dealers Philipp and Lionel Robinson (Hurst, Manuscrits grecs, 9-10). In the inside of the back cover is written “Marz 1954.”

Dimensions: The width of the page ranges from 14.0 to 15.5 cm. The height of the page is 18.9 cm. The ratio of the page (width/height) ranges from 0.741 to 0.820. The writing is in a single column. The width of the written area is about 12.1 cm. The height of the written area is about 15.0 cm. There are 20 lines per page. There are 74 extant folia.
Quires: In their present state, the papyrus leaves of the codex are placed between translucent sheets of parchment paper. The modern binding of the codex consists of several quires of these parchment paper sheets.
Cover: The codex is currently bound in modern boards, probably of the nineteenth century.
Reliure
Binding: The binding appears to have been a link-stitch at two independent pairs of sewing stations. Parchment stays are found in the centers of the quires.

Remarques générales
Paratextual features: The copyist makes regular use of ekthesis, the forked paragraphos, low dots, middle dots, high dots, colons, spacing between sections, and enlarged initial letters. Pages are numbered in Coptic and Arabic numerals, but these numbers do not correspond.

Decorations: Combinations of horizontal lines and diples extending from margin to margin mark significant breaks in the text.
